Herbert “Herb” Andrew was born to George and Anna Theirl on March 13th, 1919. He was born on a farm, in
Stanley
,
Wisconsin
, near
Chippewa
Falls
. Herb is one of eleven children. His brothers and sisters names are: Alice, Bob, Bill Ed, Marge, Marion, Laura, Frank and Ray. When Herb was 17, he snuck into flight school to take a 13 month cadet course. After flight school, he flew some troop carrying airplanes. He also was able to fly some movies stars, like Bob Hope and Marilyn Monroe, to USO events. Herb was in the service for 5 or 6 years the then went into the reserves and retired as Lieutenant Colonel.
Herb met a girl named Genevieve in first grade and the two became friends. They knew each other for many years. When Herb was discharged from the service and was back on American soil, he proposed to Genevieve. The couple was married on July 17th, 1945. After Herb and Genevieve were married they lived in
Tennessee
, North and
South Carolina
and they settled in
La Crosse
. While in
La Crosse
, Herb worked for many years at Thorpe Finance, which was a financial institution.
Herb and Genevieve had six children together Mary, Ann, Nancy, Dan, Trish, and Chris. When the children were young, the family enjoyed taking little weekend vacations to Wisconsin Dells. Herb, Genevieve, and sometimes the kids did some traveling together. They have visited
Florida
,
Washington
DC
,
Boston
,
Massachusetts
, and even
England
.
Herb has many childhood memories. One of his memories was when he was given a lunch pail as a gift. He really liked his brand new pail. His mother would pack his lunches in it for him and he would take it to school and put his pail in the furnace room to keep it cool. Another memory he has was of the times growing up when he would sneak out to the swimming hole with his friends. He would return home soaking wet and his mother and father would scold him for going swimming by himself, but the scolding was well worth it for Herb.
Out of all that Herb has done in his life, he is most proud of his children and accomplishing such high ranks in the Air force. If he were granted three wishes he would wish to be more independent (yet have lots of company), have is wife Genevieve back, and to be able to do some things over again. The most important life lesson that Herb has learned is: you have to persevere and work hard to get what you want in life.
